5 Stand-alones to Read During Quarantine
At times like these, we are all looking for new books to read. However, it may also seem a bit daunting committing to a series. Because of this, I’ve compiled a list of five stand-alone novels that grip your imagination. Bear in mind that these books aren’t ordered my preference, I really like all of them and I think they are all worth the time and dedication.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
My Oh My. What. A. Book.
This story is so weird I cannot even begin to explain it. It deals with topics such as family, trauma, friendship, and betrayal. It is amazing and definitely leaves your mouth hanging open by the end of it. I remember that when I finally reached the ending, I was sobbing of pure shock.
That Was Then, This Is Now by S.E. Hinton
If it had been my choice, I wouldn’t have read this book because it is certainly not what I most enjoy. But, I had to read it for school and, to my surprise, I loved it. I definitely did not expect such a gripping story. For me, the characters’ growth was fascinating and I really enjoyed learning along with them as they were forced to deal with what life threw at them. This story is real, and I don’t doubt that many people will identify with it and its ending.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
This book tells the story of two girls during the time of the Taliban in Afghanistan and it’s absolutely and splendidly breathtaking, moving, inspiring, and heart wrenching. I cannot express how beautiful the writing is and I learned so so so much while reading it. I definitely recommend this book to EVERYONE. It is worth it. Trust me.
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
This book is exactly my cup of tea… Adventure, romance, a little science fiction… But, I am aware that it is definitely not everyone’s ideal read. In fact, there are a lot of people who do not like this story. However, I vouch for it. I think its clever and entertaining. Particularly, I really enjoyed the the dynamics amongst the characters, considering that they were all very complicated and constantly affected by everything that happened in the story. If you love romance and don’t mind some sci-fi, you will like this book. But, I warn hardcore science fiction fans, this is probably not the book for you.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
This is, without a doubt, a ride. This book is fun and incredibly entertaining. It’s bursting with references to countless video games, movies, books, tv shows, among many others. I must warn you though, it turns out to be a long read that requires your attention, considering that it is full of descriptions and has few dialogues. Nonetheless, it is a great story and the vast majority of the people will not be able to guess its ending.
